The Man Who Fell to Earth is the visionary sci-fi saga from director Walter Murch (The English Patient, The Thin Blue Line) an international co-production with a reported budget of $14 million. Delivering a time-spanning tale of Earths first contact with a strange visitor from beyond the galaxy, this heavily metaphorical thriller is a tale of science fiction and commerce. Played by David Bowie, the leading actor of the film but also executive producer of the film, The Man Who Fell to Earth is a metaphor for the government, scientists and businessmen who will plunder whatever alien technologies they come across; a warning to the world. The film has attracted controversy in recent years for its alleged and sometimes incoherent message, but also for its legendary status. The Man Who Fell to Earth is grounded in a futuristic, post-atomic storyline but also features a hard-hitting realism. Many scenes and locations were shot at actual well-known locations, such as NASAs Ames Research Center in California. A.C.T.`s early years were fraught with financial difficulties, bringing to the end their attempts to do a U.S. premiere of Vol. 1 in November 1968. The British premiere of Vol. 2 occurred in June 1969 at a time when the organization had real problems making ends meet. With this version of Vol. 3, A.C.T. has paid much more attention to the music and band members than their first American premiere.
A.C.T. maintained its financial problems throughout the period of the 1970s. With such resource problems, and despite the addition of the A.C.T. Foundation of which David Garrick was a major donor, it is not surprising to learn that A.C.T. later went bankrupt and Garrick was forced to sell off his remaining interest in the company to other interested parties. With a successful stint as the general manager of Columbia Pictures, Garrick left A.C.T. and started the A.C.T. Foundation with Terence Fisher, a former opera director and producer. When Fisher died shortly thereafter, Garrick was awarded a lifetime annuity of $200,000, which he used to purchase the American Center Theater and the A.C.T. Foundation. 3d9ccd7d82
